NRA First Steps Pistol and Intro to Concealed Carry Course

The course provides a thorough introduction to firearms safety and handling.  The initial four hours of classroom instruction includes: NRA policies for safe gun handling, pistol parts and operation, types of ammunition, shooting fundamentals, cleaning and continued skill development opportunities.  The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester / NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a First Steps course completion certificate are provided to each attendee.

The course completion certificate is an acceptable training verification that may be used to obtain a Virginia resident / non-resident concealed carry permit.

There is an additional two hours of lecture following the First Steps Orientation designed to provide students with an initial introduction to concealed carry techniques and the applicable Virginia laws.  The lecture includes: Use of deadly force, holster types, situational awareness, legal ramifications, “What If” scenarios and clothing selection. (Note: This 2 hour lecture is designed by IDS, llc instructors and is not part of the NRA approved First Steps Pistol Orientation course.)

Cost for class is $125 and is payable in advance to reserve your seat.  The class is limited to 12 students.  If you do not own a firearm, one will be provided for you.

Ammunition and Range Expense is the responsibility of the student and is NOT included in the $125. Ammo can be purchased through IDS or the NRA at the time of the class. Range Time is between $10-22. Depending on some variables like if you are a member or if you already have shot there and have a range card.

Our Mission

IDS focuses on teaching intuitive defensive handgun skills that lend themselves to efficiently handling a firearm in ways that are congruent with the body’s natural reactions under stress. This methodology allows us to better prepare our students for situations where drawing a firearm is a possibility.
