NRA Certified Pistol Instructor Course

All candidates are required to successfully complete a live-fire, a pre-course qualification at a local range, observed by an instructor or training counselor, to assess the candidate’s firearm handling skills (Loading / Unloading / Malfunctions), attitude towards safety and marksmanship skills. The candidates may use their own revolver or semi-automatic for the live fire shooting, however, the handling skills must be demonstrated with both a revolver and semi-automatic.  (The maximum distance used for marksmanship drills is 50 feet).

Candidates who provide documented proof of Classified Sharpshooter or better in NRA Conventional or Action Pistol, Classified Marksman or better in International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) or Classified “C” or better in US Practical Shooting Association (USPSA)/International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) or a certification as an NRA LEAD Handgun/Shotgun or Tactical Handgun certified instructor, are exempt from the pre-course qualification.

If, during the pre-course qualification, it is determined that a candidate does not possess the necessary attitude, skills, and knowledge to be a successful NRA Pistol Instructor, the deposit will be fully refunded.  However, each candidate is responsible for the cost of their range time and ammunition (@25 rounds).  The pre-qualification is held on the weekend immediately prior to the class.

Upon successful completion of this training course, candidates will be recommended for certification as an instructor in the following disciplines: NRA Basic Pistol and NRA First Steps Pistol.  The total cost of the course is $375 and includes your class materials.  Payment is due in advance of the pre-course qualification.  A pre-course questionnaire will be emailed to each candidate following registration.  This questionnaire must be completed and returned upon receipt.

Our Mission

IDS focuses on teaching intuitive defensive handgun skills that lend themselves to efficiently handling a firearm in ways that are congruent with the body’s natural reactions under stress. This methodology allows us to better prepare our students for situations where drawing a firearm is a possibility.
